Wigan & Leigh Pensioners Link are well known throughout the borough for the work they do in offering information and advice, supporting older people maintain their independence, engage in local activities to avoid isolation, providing a listening ear and generally helping out in times of need.
How do they do this? Through the efforts of their small staff team and a large army of wonderful volunteers.
Wigan & Leigh Pensioners Link have various volunteering opportunities and are especially pleased to announce their recent success in securing funding from the Health & Social Care Volunteering Fund to provide a borough-wide, volunteer-led, shopping service for people aged 65 and over with a diagnosis of first stage dementia. There are over 700,000 people in the UK suffering with dementia - one in every 88 people - and this number is expected to rise over the next few years.

Office and administration.
Computer data inputting, website maintenance, telephone communication,
sorting incoming and outgoing mail, and photcopying, and reception duties.
Fundraising
Helping to arrange fundraising events, new ideas and enthusiasm always welcome.
Time Limited Contact Scheme
Short term low level practical support to those experiencing times of change : home visits, phone calls, shopping, vacuuming, accompanying to medical appointments and social activities.
Community Link
Providing information, adviice and activities in one-stop locations throughout the borough, delivering activities and assisting with promotion of Pensioners Link services.
Counselling
Work experience for final year students.
Carers HelpLine
Manning telephone line, supporting carers.
Management Committee
Strategic planning and delivery.
